Gotta Love This!

So, we're here hanging with Graham watching The History Channel and the story of Christ's birth. When the narrator started talking about Jesus, his ears perked up and he looked to the TV and said,
"I know Jesus." And, added "but who was he?" Then before I could answer, he expanded on his question, "I know who he is, but I don't know how he got that bad word for a name"
Classic!

Huh!

I love this look on Jack's face!
"Whadda-R-Yalookin' At?"

Trying to get rid of our piano, so we can get a smaller one from our friends. Anyone want it? It's still in working condition and Jack still uses it almost daily :)

Halloween Pix

I forgot to post Halloween pics on the post earlier today! Doh :)

"Change You Can Believe In"

and "Death"

Halloween and Day of the Dead

Late posting Halloween pictures- but they were fun, so even though they are late, ENJOY!

Graham decked out in his Day of the Dead wear!

Skull shirt, shorts, socks and shoes. The socks are really neat and particularly "beautiful" with green and sparkles; in true Dia de los Muertos style (not ghoulish, but celebratory)

I decorated a ceramic skull with real and fake flowers, colored in some of the teeth and lines with pretty and sparkling colors. Graham and I made candy suckers. There were haystacks, corn, flowers and best of all, skull suckers (all molds of which I had on hand, no special purchases for anything). The only thing I had to leave the house for on this project was to walk across the alley to my neighbor Sue and ask if I could have some yellow mum blossoms! The black eyed Susans we had (two with life). Marigolds are the traditional flower of Day of the Dead, but these yellow mum blossoms were perfect! I had a cute little blue bow to but on the skull forehead, so this calvavera was of the female persuasion, ha!

And, then we were off to a Day of the Dead party at the Jorgenson's of Saint Joseph! How's that, a bunch of Scandinavians celebrating Dia de los Muertos?

I love the rockers jamming out on Guitar Hero! JD shaved his head just for the occasion. I was the lame one out and didn't even try Guitar Hero. I claimed to be band manager and asked if anyone needed something- like a drink? It was great fun and there was super food all around. Those Jorgenson's know how to put on a spread :)

Wow!

Looks like WE did it!

I'll let the pundits, political scientists and entertainermedia give the schpiel, the spin, the political forecast and fashion forecast for the White House.

All I'll give you is what I saw personally on the streets. Personally from what I read. Personally from what I feel at this moment.

Everyone came together.

I canvased for the DFL a bit the other day and not in what I would call a typical liberal stronghold of St. Cloud. My hope was reignited as I talked with our older folks that were home. WWII vets. Housewives. Grandmas and Grandpas. Great-Grandmas and Grandpas. They wanted a change for their children and grandchildren. They've seen it all. They've lived through the depression. They know the sadness that can take over a country not looked after. Not cared for. Not united.

My Hope has seen the light of reality.

A sigh of relief before the work begins.

A GOOD day in my house! In my Minnesota! In my United States of America!

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Wise words, from a wise man:

"I've been meaning to ask, just haven't gotten around to it, plus I'm
worried that the question is premature. But you know, I think I'm finally at the
point where I believe it will happen. Now there's less than a month to go. Now
it's just a matter of days. Days until America does something which, I'll be
honest, I would have bet America would never do. At least not any time soon.
Just days until in one swift moment, the entire world will do a double-take.
Days until Americans of all stripes will come together to reaffirm America's
promise to its own people. Days until MLK's dream, and the dreams of all people
who love this country's founding PRINCIPLES more than life itself, finally come
true. I want to know: Where's the party? On the evening of November 4th, when
this moment is finally announced, where do I go to celebrate? Where can I be to
experience this historical moment with my brothers and sisters in humanity, with
those who truly understand what it may mean for us all? I'm not going to be at
some Democratic party balloon fest. I am not going to be at a bar. I am not
going to be in a gym. I am going to be at home, watching the TV with the volume
turned down so I don't wake my kids. And when the time comes, when the moment is
announced, I will walk out my front door into the street, and I will look up at
the sky and shed tears of joy. That'll be my victory party. To look up at the
stars and hope that this means a better future for my little ones. If I'm lucky,
some of you reading this will come outside right then too, and maybe we can
smile at each other in silence. Either way, when you finally hear it announced,
on the evening of November 4th, that Americans came together and took their
country back, and you're sitting at home celebrating the moment quietly alone or
as a family, spare a second would you and join me out in the street, and look up
at the sky and feel the smiles, hopes and joy of millions of people like you and
me reflecting down from the stars."

I received just received this from my friend Stevie. It was written by her friend's husband (I believe he is from small town Iowa, I've communicated with him and his wife on Diaper and Natural forums). Anyway, wouldn't it be nice if we all could open our doors up Tuesday night at Midnight and look up to the heavens and give thanks for a new day; new country; new world view?

So, after my downer post earlier today, let's keep up the hope!
Peace!
How are ya'll faring with this election stuff?

I feel like I see a light at the end of the tunnel, but I'm just too darn scared to believe and get my hopes up after the last two debauched presidential elections. I still can't get over 2004 and how, oh how on god's green earth Dubya made it work his way again. But now, I'm even more scared, because Palin as VP makes no bones about wanting to push her weight around, whereas Cheney didn't let on so much that that was what he was doing. I don't know who is more dangerous, one with a public announcement of her agenda or the one with covert operations? They are both overzealous characters with one war happy at all costs; the other still wanting to be voted in as head cheerleader at the high school rally! What's up with winking at the camera and scrunchy up your nose acting as if somebody just told you Barak Obama has cooties? Nut cases at any rate!

I really believe in Obama and think he has the capabilities to unite us with the rest of the world again. If he gets in and he doesn't come through and totally falls back from his promises I will likely never vote again. I know that I shouldn't put all my hope on one guy, but I don't think I can get my hopes up again or believe in somebody ever again. We are all so down and need a country that we can believe in and I think Obama can deliver that. At this point in my life, I've been let down so many times that it's hard to see that there is anyone good out there anymore (in life and politics).

OK, not so to get ya'll down, but that's what I'm thinking up here in Blue, Blue Minnesota- I hope Blue is going to mean more of a reflection of the country's tide and not my state of mind!

It's Not For Girls!!

My sister Ann brought these lovely candy bars from the UK for the boys! I've had them hidden for them for a while because I wanted to get some good shots of them with these unique candy bars. Not sure why they are NOT FOR GIRLS, but it seems like a good gimmick to get the kids to buy their candy! Made by Nestle and I liken it to a Chunky- remember those?

When I was in Canada this summer with my sisters, I promised Jack I would bring back a super good chocolate bar that he had got the last time he was in Canada (2007). They were out of them at the border store, so he had to settle for something regular. I want to say it was a Caramilk he wanted, but that's just like a Carmello I think. Anyway, when Ann was in Scotland this past August, she picked up these candy bars because she felt bad for him because he didn't get the special candy bar he wanted. She thought these Yorkie bars were super funky and silly and of course they thought they rocked. I mean, come on! A candy bar made just for boys? How cool and Auntie Deutschie is so KEWL too!

Camping in October

We went to Fort Ridgely State Park last weekend and had beautiful tent camping! The fort was pretty cool and the historical center had two very helpful staff. They answered a lot of questions and gave us more ideas for reading material about the Dakota Uprising. Poor Graham was sick- but what a trooper! He was feverish and up-chucking, but still was in the camping spirit (as much as he could be).

Graham trying to stay warm
after everything had to be pulled
out of the tent quickly
for "a blow-chow" incident, requiring the
HAZMAT team (mostly Mom) to do an assessment and
cleaning!

One Happy Boy...

and one very mad boy!

The tale of two brothers:

One Happy Boy!
Jack turned 10 on Monday and we had a *special cake for him.
*As for every birthday at our house, we hit the Cub Foods clearance rack in the morning and get what we can.*
Sometimes we score with a Twins cake or other desired design. Sometimes the cakes are "generic Happy Birthday", which is just fine because one can jazz them up a bit with trinkets and candles from the decorating bin in the cupboard. Not OK is a Princess, Barbie or Hannah Montana cake! We were at Cub a few days before his birthday and I teased him that there was nice Hannah Montana cake that would last until his birthday- NOT!
This time Jack got a LadyBug Cake! Yummy double layer chocolate and bright! This seems to be an OK "special" deal with the kids. It's fun to see what Mom (and sometimes Dad and the kids) can find for a bargain. I once received a cake with a downhill skier planted headfirst into the cake by two cheeky bargain hunters (Daddy and Jack). That was classic and I will fondly remember their gesture. Truly "special"!

Another boy, not so happy as the mini-magnadoodle pad displays. Graham not happy about having to go to his bed last night decided to protest with an emotional sign. When I got up stairs to check on him and turn off his light, I found a sacked out little boy with this sign on his chest! Clearly he is angry with me and wishes that he didn't have a Mom. This is a sentiment we hear often from him when he is met with aversion. He has displayed similar notes with Dad as the big No-No! We've also heard it vocalized, often with a loud scream (ugh!). Brother Jack has often felt and heard the wrath of an upset Graham as well. But, right now he is happy as can be. Ah, the life of an almost 6yr old, silly, spirited, misunderstood boy!

Speaks for itself!

My neighbor gave me a heads up on this one (I missed it when it originally aired). Apparently it's one of the hottest things that's been seen on youtube these days and has had many, many Google hits (count mine as 4,305,200,779,868,099 today, lol).

Funny and yet, one of those "rings of truth funny".

I love this weekend's opinion by Garrison Keillor! My sister pointed it out to me while hanging out at the homestead. My dad, not too thrilled with the "liberal" line of thinking was not impressed.

Go ahead. Click. Punch. Poke. Garrison's picture to read it!

More Words on McCain

A wise woman I know said this:

My thoughts on the McCain pick is this... it was like an impulsive Las
Vegas Wedding, Intoxicating and thrilling and bold idea at the time, but come
Monday morning you look over and see who you really got!

from sister Ann :)

'Nuff said, don't you think?

Graham, Al and Jack

Graham and Jack sitting on the Step of Greatness with Al Franken, DFL candidate for Minnesota Senate.
When people started asking for photos, Al told people they could come on up onto the "Step of Greatness"- of course Al was just being goofy. He's really not full of himself, he's quite down to earth. Daddy told Jack to cheer Al on with "You can take that guy! You can take that guy!" Jack got up there and told Al just that. Al was pretty impressed and wanted to know where Jack heard him say that. When Al was at the Wellstone Dinner, he told a great story that Paul Wellstone's son told him. When he was running cross-country races, Paul would run along side of him and cheer him on, chanting "You can take that guy! You can take that guy". He'd be down and falling behind and his dad would keep up with him. Then, he'd look and his dad would be far, far ahead of him- out running him!

Jack told a Franken booth staffer that he only had "9 more years until I vote!" I had no idea he figured that. She was quite impressed (and so was I).

We are watching the Democrat National Convention. As we wonder how McCain will fair with his acceptance speech/crowd. So, is it the media coverage that makes him pull all of these people together? Both Chris and I see or think there seems to be some media love-affair with Obama. We wonder if McCain will get this much "coverage" and he is "announcing" his VP candidate tonight. Will he get the coverage Obama did when they (media) were stalking various VP options. I haven;t seen it so far and unlikely McCain is going to pull the coverage like this. One of the reasons we hear more about McCain's VP pick is because our Gov Tim Pawlenty is suspected to be on the very short list.

So, back to my question. The reason, I feel that Obama gets such coverage is because he is pulling out into uncharted waters- history in the making! Beyond that, he has made many people from all sides (especially the youth) come together and stand up like never before. The media covers what's hot and Obama has been on fire for a long time now. The fire hasn't died and the coverage just keeps going on. As long as there is a fire, the media will chase it down. The television, radio and paper are only a small part of the media that keeps this fire going. More, the Internet and the youth have shaped a lot of this campaign in my opinion. He's stayed super positive and that keeps the fire going. What an exciting time in history!

State Fair!

The boys and I hit the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday! Awesome weather :0) Can't beat 75F and sunny!

The boys were pretty darn good. We went with friend Robyn and her little guy, Jonah. We got there about 9:30 and were leaving at 2:30ish. Perfect timing as it was getting a bit crowded from my taste. If you go, make sure you do the "Park and Ride". We had no problem getting parking at Energy Park (exit) at ETC.

Graham, Jonah and Jack hitching a ride to the Fair!
We all wore Boston Scientific shirts, as did many other fair goers :) Robyn works at their Maple Grove office and it was their corporate day (employees get discounted tickets and rides). If we were spotted, we could win prizes. Actually, only Robyn could win, but we were helpers to her with our bright, blue Boston Scientific shirts! Well, because Robyn was with me, of course she was spotted and won! LOL. I'm tellin' ya, I'm a lucky one ;)
Actually, Jack answered the first trivia question, which she admittedly didn't know. What is Minnesota's State tree? The rest of the questions were about her company, her department and her supervisor's phone extension, etc. She ended up winning a $25 Pier 1 Imports gift certificate! Yeah!
We had a great time together and I'll blog more about our adventures tomorrow!
Good Night all!

Two Super Cool Things!

One to read about

and

One to watch!

Yesterday I got a phone call from JM Oil (JM Speedstop) and I won $250 in gas! YES!
I usually go to the one in Foley because it's almost always less than in St. Cloud. I always have a .05 cents off coupon (per gallon, jack couldn't figure out I was so exicted to get a nickel off, lol) and get my card stamped. Wednesday's are double stamp days, fill up fast that way! Once it's full you can get free ice, soda, chips or .05 cents off/per gallon...then fill out the other side with your info and turn it in and WIN!
So, remember when I asked the question? Are you still sure you don't want to touch me? LOL

OK now, two of the cutest kids I know just put out a video!
My friend Jennifer from Athens, GA has some of the cutest kids I've ever met! Each one delightful, cute and so darn talented! Scroll down past the info on the "FLIP" and watch the fun and cuteness (sound is a little fuzzy at first, but don't worry it comes in better later). Oh, and heed Jennifer's warning!

The Wellstone Dinner 2008

We were honored to attend the Wellstone Dinner at the St. Cloud Civic Center last evening.
And, Chris was double honored to help entertain the crowd with Mike Sharp. Chris sang the Mason Jennings song The Ballad of Paul and Sheila. A hard one to listen to, no doubt. I captured some photos. The boys really wanted Al's autograph- I didn't feel that would be "kosher" (friend Corrine said Al was super nice and won't mind, but I refrained from approaching him in the end).

Al Franken was a guest speaker at the Wellstone Dinner.

Corrine (Salk) Jacobs and Rob Jacobs.
Rob is running for MN state rep for the area mostly east of us.
Corrine grew up in my hometown and I worked with her many years at the St. Cloud Hospital. She's super sweet, funny and breeds bengal cats. She and I have a lot in common: She grew up on Main street. I grew up on Main street. She is from a huge family (12 kids). I'm from a huge family (13 kids). Her dad was working all hours of the day and weekend -our town doctor. My dad worked all hours of the day and weekend-refrigeration repair man, especially farmer's bulk tanks, when they need fixing, it's dire or the milk will spoil. Her mom pretty much stayed home, didn't drive (as far as I know) and raised kids. My mom stayed home, didn't drive and raised kids. She was friends with my sister Ann and of course I'm really close to my sister Ann. On top of that, there are many of her siblings and my siblings that share the same names- there were only so many good, Catholic names available for our parents in the 50's & 60's apparently! LOL Also, like many of the kids around town back in the day, we families with lots of kids pretty much had the run of the town. Those were good days!

Klobe ( sounds like, but not really like... Kobe)
When Doug Clark was asked to introduce Senator Klobuchar (in Tarryl's absence), he asked his sons what he might say. Son #2 who does a lot of phone banking for the CentralMN-DFL asked if he might convince "Klobe" to come down to the district office and help with phone calls!
Klobe? I think I like it!

Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum

I'm a big, fat cat sitting on my big, fat bum!

Eat your heart out Garfield!
Halvor is quite a sight most days- he is the furriest, laziest, purriest, messiest, whiniest feline I've ever set eyes on (we thinking he was watching TV when this picture was shot)!

Jack celebrates his NICU graduation

St. Cloud Hospital NICU

celebrated 20 years this past June.

Dr. Norman Virnig and Jack (June 2008)
Jack says hi every body Jack is cool signed ruth!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a past graduate, Jack was invited to the celebration at Molitor's Trout Farm. This September will be 10 years since Jack was whisked out of my sight and taken to the NICU. The 17 day ordeal was totally unexpected (I was having a very healthy pregnancy) and much longer than we expected. We are so happy to have our healthy, happy, silly, funky boy. He's a fine example of very dedicated doctors and nurses who work to help our babies when they take an unexpected turn. Way back when Jack was patient, Dr. Norman Virnig and Dr. Fredricks were the only NICU doctors at the St. Cloud Hospital. Dr. Virnig set up the NICU and was there to greet all the graduates.

Dr. Virnig or Dr. Fredricks are no longer neonatoligists at the St. Cloud Hospital, but I owe them everything for taking care of my first little boy!

Winnipeg Folk Fest

I just got back from the Winnipeg Folk Fest on Monday- what a time!
This was my second WFF and the most interesting (even for many long-time WFF attendees). The weather was crazy! Lightening like mad the first night (I thought for sure we'd all die). Rain and winds all day long on Saturday-sustained 40mph winds. Did I mention that it was all day long? Tense familial storms that I weathered with my 3 sisters Ann, Mary and Diane. Four sisters, one Toyota Prius and lots of issues. Add to that mix the worst weather I've ever been in, much less camping 5 days through it all. Ah, but the music. The sweet, sweet music.
I was really excited to see Nanci Griffith- her music and voice have been part of my growing for the better part of 2 decades. I can't believe that I waited so long to see her. I loved that the whole group sitting out in the windswept rains of Saturday sang together as she led us in Pete Seeger's "If I Had A Hammer"!She's a gem. What more can I say?
Lots of world music and folk fest faves. It was hard to see it all (well, actually impossible). Some of my favorite sounds came from the klezmer, middle Eastern, Brazilian/Latin sounds. Michael Franti and Eliza Gilkyson were great. Though my husband was right about seeing Michael Franti two years in a row- not as special or groovin' (though that could have been the family tension of the first night there, yikes).
The big surprise there for me was Justin Townes Earle. Though I knew I wanted to see him. I just haven't had time to explore his music and I'm glad I didn't listen to his album first. His stripped down two piece stage show at the folk fest was super. I now have the CD "The Good Life" (signed, thank you Justin for taking the time) and I really enjoy the pedal steel, fiddle and B3 organ sounds great. But, I truly enjoyed the troubadour charisma that he led on stage. Just him and Cory Younts on harp, mando and the right complimenting backup vocals. Earle hits the showmanship styling right on- old time country, mountain or storytelling with a soul beyond his years. He has an old soul, but also a tenderness of a young man growing up in these troubled times. I look forward to seeing him grow whether he sticks with his troubadour styling or moves on down new roads. I can hear his dad at times, but if you told me his name was Justin Smith I'd still be amazed at his heart filled, soulful lyrics and voice. He's got history behind him, and history in front of him and he's a good one.

So another music experience well worth it. Love the feeling of getting away and letting music control my life for a while. Back to reality, kids and work. But music is never far off in my life. Always the background of what we do around here. And, a funny thing happened at the library yesterday. A woman came in wondering about a request she made. She's an older woman, definitely not what I'd call Red Hot Chili Peppers material at first glance. When I looked up the bio she had on her list I said, "oh, an Anthony Kiedis bio, I didn't know he had written a book." She looked at me and said, "Wow, I'm impressed you knew who that was". I guess I don't look like RHCP fan material either, ha-ha-ha! ~Yep, I get out of my "librarian" box a lot!
Pictures to follow, at some point ;)

Little Blessings

I came across this picture and note in my emails (from over 2 years ago, I really need to clean out the files). But, this is why I save stuff I guess. The email was from my sister Mary and it was entitled "Little Blessings".

"Just wanted to let you know that I was thinking of you this morning. Though are lives are sometimes complicated and frustrating, it helps to find peace in the little blessings of the day--like a freshly peeled orange, fresh brewed coffee, the warm winter sun, chocolate covered booger kisses, good music, the love of a sister...etc.....
Hope things start to look up for you soon---follow your heart--you were meant for Something More! (another good book to read). I'll bring it along with Simple Abundance(by the same author) on Sunday. Hope to catch up with you at Mom's.
Peace,
Mary"

I was going through some tough times, a mid-life crisis of sorts. Coming up on 15years at the St. Cloud Hospital pharmacy (20+ years in pharmacy life) and not happy, fulfilled or monetarily benefiting from it either, really. Mary, always the optimist and looking out for the soul, spirituality and mentality of others sent me this simple and precious, yet poignant photo that she had taken before her morning breakfast.

Within 3 months I was hired at the Great River Regional Library and on my way to a new career and happier times!

Happy Birthday to you

...you look like a monkey and you smell like one too!

Graham was singing the classic kids lyric to his daddy for his birthday. Of course, Chris did not want to be in a birthdy picture. Tuesday Chris turned another year and it was also our 19yr anniversary! Yikes, next year is the Big 20...

Since Cub didn't have any clearanced out cakes, Graham and I got daddy what he really likes anyway-Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls!

Graham helped me decorate and set up the birthday rolls for daddy.

SOLD!

Sold the old Volvo yesterday for a whopping $750! Whoo-hoo!

Some guy was suppose to come and get it weeks ago and we could barely squeeze $650 out of him. After promising several times he was coming to get it, I gave up. I posted it on Craigslist Mpls for $900/o.b.o. and then later on Craigslist St. Cloud. After a few inquiries and some more promises to come up to see it- some woman from Annandale came over yesterday and offered $750 cash and she'd take it away at 3pm. SOLD!

Ah, now we are not the TT of our neighborhood anymore and another Clampettmoilbe has left the premises. Oh wait, our house looks pretty crappy still, so maybe we still are the TT of the neighborhood. Well, it's good to aspire to be "something", right?

Evil TV?

Well, I haven't updated for a while. Let's see?

What's up with evil TV? It's not evil like you may be thinking ...let me tell you a story.

Sometimes, when we are desperate or think we are desperate, we do not always make brilliant decisions. I find that I often drag my feet on things. I'm not one to change my mind, my hobby or surroundings often. I would categorize myself as stable, predictable. And maybe the following story isn't out of desperation so much, but lack of planning. That I'll admit to not planning or procrastination-this much is true. So, I was telling my beloved father my woes about TV's dying and going on the fritz all to often these days. Says I, "I wish they made them like they used to. Give me a good old Zenith or Curtis Mathis". My father says that they have had issues of late with their TV as well. We received a call from Dad a few days later about a "free" TV ad he saw in the paper. I called, checked it out. It's big, but free and figure it would work. And, perhaps I could send it to Mom and Dad if Chris nixed the idea. Chris borrowed the 2-wheeler from work to get it out of her apartment. It's a console- not a huge, ginormous console, but in a cabinet and heavy. Off we go, with the back end somewhat not secure, only "slightly open". Only 8 blocks or so to our house- no biggie, right? Chris was still quite miffed with me about agreeing to pick this thing up. Did it fall out of the back of our soon to be sold Volvo wagon? Smash into a thousand pieces on University Drive? Read on.

So, gingerly I made each stop sign so that it wouldn't take on some back-sliding motion out the cargo area. I made it home, but what happened next took me by surprise. While deciding how this TV would make it in the house we came to the conclusion that we should try to just take it on to Mom and Dad's. Chris pushed it in a little further as having the hatch "slightly open" would not do going to down interstate 94. Tough as he is, it was a very tight fit and he could barely push it in further. But, he did clear the latch on the cargo floor. I closed the hatch door (which needs to be held up or it slams down). So, can you imagine what happened next? Yes, I didn't really get a chance to close the hatch, it more or less goes down on it's own momentum. The top of the TV actually didn't have the clearance needed- the damn back window smashed out! No problem if one has comprehensive insurance- but on a 14 year old car with 226,000 miles? Not likely. So, basically my free TV cost me my car!

I called my Dad and he chuckled (not to be mean)- he told Mom as he handed her the phone to be really nice to me and not give me a hard time (like that would ever happen) because I was having a really, really bad day.

Still waiting on a guy to pick it up for "parts" or to fix-

Bubble's nephew, though he has been under the tutelage of Ricky

- all that's missing is the hockey stick to clear the trash off the car and maybe toaster oven to cook some chicken fingers. You can help this young man come into his own and donate these items- God knows Ricky can't spare anymore of his goodies on this urchin!
