PUFFED WHEAT CANDY!!!

You asked for it justmefromhere, so here it is...

Notice how well loved the recipe card is! I took this from Mom's house, as she had a few copies on hand. I think it is in my sister Lucy's hand writing-

So, here is the recipe for the coveted Ohmann house favorite. One of a few things that the neighbors, the cousins and friends gushed over as they sat merrily munching in the little cluttered kitchen of the house hidden behind the lilac bushes on main street. A sweet concoction, made even more sweet by memories of simple, fun days gone by. Days that were filled with playing a game kickball or baseball in the vacant feed store lot next door. Days where at any given time you could find neighbor kids out on the back step bartering their sugared cereal or fancy store bought snacks for a slice of Mom's homemade bread or pancakes. Days with many visitors coming and going with hardly a knock at the door- all were welcomed into Virginia's kitchen. Sit down and let's see what we can snack on. Often times it was the scraps from the pie crust baked and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Sometimes a little kuchen with butter. Mostly though, our kitchen was full of just us kids- thirteen in number, hundreds if you counted all our stories, imaginations, questions, joys and problems brought to Mom's kitchen. Good days. Good days indeed!

I am often asked now to bring this to family functions, especially girly functions. All crazy eight girls love to have coffee, eat this and gab.

Puffed-Wheat Candy

  • 3/4 C sugar
  • 3/4 C brown sugar
  • 1/2 C corn syrup
  • 1/2 C butter
  • 3 T cocoa (I add about 4)
  • 1 T milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 8 C puffed wheat

Mix in 5 QT sauce pan at medium heat all ingredients in order. Bring to a boil, remove from heat. Add puffed wheat. Mix thoroughly. Spread into 9x13" pan. Let cool. Cut into squares.

Thanks for the recipe Ruth! I'm sure it will be a hit with my sweet-lovers :) That old card is fabulous too.

I've found that I can't always find the regular, non-sugared puffed wheat, in that case one could use the "golden puffs" (what they used to call Sugar Smacks- ha-ha! Sugar! Smack! Ha-Ha-Ha oh, what influences we had back in the 70's)

Anyway, just cut down on the sugars if you can't find the non- sugared puffed wheat. But lately I've found it kind of high up, in the corner of the Cub brand bagged cereals. I'm happy to have it-

I made a batch last night...ate the first row...yum. Woke up this a.m., there was a row and a half left; yep, all gone in a flash. Luckily, I bought a second bag of puffed wheat...might see another batch this weekend.
